(Francisco learning how to cover an entire area against my roundhouse kick, during timing sparing at the Recife's core of the BWCA)

A major difference for those who make Wing Chun focused on combat applications is that we do not just repeat techniques all the time or mimic movements that have passed to exhaustion. Yes, this is part of the training, but there is a purpose and a method behind it.

Several times SiFu already instilled this in my regular training and one of the focuses was just this: Break the idea where in training everything works and go for the test. Yes, this is frustrating in many - or most of the time. Dealing with this kind of feeling is not an easy thing, but there is a great benefit to it ...

The feeling that comes from this type of approach is precisely that which gives us subsidies to approach art in a dispassionate, coherent and closer to reality. It is something to be built in the long run, precisely because of the idea that SiSok Gung Gorden Lo intuited to us during his seminar last September, when he said, in other words that "the Wing Chun system has no end" for its dominion technical, and this is even a disadvantage of the system.

(João - left of the photo - and Antônio, practicing the exercise to improve Kwan Sau)

Whenever we train in a repetitive and intense way a particular "hand" of the system, we go through some phases and methods of training so that, at the last moment, we can put this "technique of the day" into controlled sparing. This requires a good understanding of how the technique works, where it will not work, how to improve angles, positioning, and energy and how we train it plays a key role.

(John during his application round, putting Kwan Sau against strong roundhouse kick)

Make no mistake, my friend. This is no secret, much less something '' exclusive '' of ancestral Chinese knowledge, or specific to any clan or lineage. Who often sells the idea of exclusivity, unique method, rare and bla bla bla, is far from the truth. If you can fight - and I'm not talking about soft sparring or training with your partner - but fighting the '' core '' of your martial style, then your style, no matter who you've learned, is effective.

Talking to my friend and training partner Thiago the other day, we were talking about this. He said that in many respects several Wing Chun families, no matter how they come from different historical people and moments, have the same approach, the same approach to training, and that by far the problems that exist between a branch and other (when they exist) are caused by people who are not Chinese (a finding that has nothing more) and try to seize a "do not know what" and that in many cases, master or family leader simply does not care about any of this, does not care and is not in the know, as long as he has his $ at the end of the day.

So if so, it's best to focus on training what you learn with your SiFu, Si Hing, Si Dai, etc, etc ... in order to understand how the system works, not thinking about a flag, brand, or any damn these.

What wins is a good training method, not a logo.

In training last Saturday at the racetrack, we were able to review Kwan Sau as a 'day technique' (see article on Dido's blog), and we could have good moments of free applications of this hand of the system, after training him to exhaustion . Kwan sau has at least four variants where he can be placed-practiced (Chi Sau, against punches, kicks and combined use with a leg cover) and over, we could review, within the training method, how we could use them in a simple combination. However, soon after, we set out for the test, which is where the thing '' catches ''.
Our training has been following this more intense rhythm and so, we continue practicing. The idea is to make art, be a differential, not a mere '' repeat '' of pattern. And so, let's go on forever.

(Francisco and I, during the Fighting Drills practice last year)

'' Kung Fu in many ways, and ultimately lies in 'know how' - know how to do, in a lower term. Often it is easier - once we have a certain ability - to seek to act according to what a situation is demanding of us, than to fight against the tide so that its will is established, result is achieved. In other situations, this '' fighting the tide '' will be the only thing you will have to do.Once you practice, study and seek to understand that in a Chinese system - such as Wing Chun, for example - you learn and work within a structured part to create a skill in which you can work even when you do not there is structure to be worked, it will give you subsidies so that you can use strategies that always favor you, regardless of the situations that may arise.

'' However, success or failure are consequences and the way we emotionally deal with it does not necessarily have to do with whether or not we have expertise. A moment of high or low will always bring something to think about, review or evaluate. Most people's problem is that they just stop to self-assess in downturns. It is always very easy to get euphoric in times of high or depressed in times of low. Pro Kung Fu practitioner, he must go beyond; Know how to make the most of each situation and make the most of each moment, good or bad. It's not easy and I'm not saying it is. At neither end. But if today there is some kind of battlefield that is crueler than a ring or any other environment in which you face an opponent willing to 'kill you', this is undoubtedly the emotional field. The challenge is to know how to manage this in the best way. ''

Approaching this and several other topics, the last Saturday was the 2nd edition of the Free Open Class, promoted by the Recife core BWCA. This '' event '' aims to open a free class to the general public in order to promote the nucleus of the Brazilian Wing Chun Academy, as well as the SEDE school in Salvador. We had the presence of invited guests and the event started promptly at 09:30 p.m. Saturday was sunny and the return to activities at the PM Club were following normally. As we are always very dear to the entire staff, from the janitors to the highest positions, then it is always good to meet them again.

As said, Kung Fu lies in '' know-how ''. Often this know-how implies both 'knowing' and following a certain plan, as well as '' knowing '' to act in an improvised way, feeling the moment and yet with a certain level of excellence to achieve a certain intent

(Photo impromptu at the end of the dynamics; All well imbued during the practice)

This time, I decided, by feeling the climate and the environment with people, to leave the schedule aside and act according to the "feel" of the moment. Everything turned out to be very fruitful, though. The conversation wheel about martial arts before starting the activity yielded interesting subjects on the approach to the '' self-defense '' issue and several times I quoted SiFu and the view shared by us on the subject and some aspects mentioned in the first few paragraphs of this post . And each one could contribute a bit to the discussion, which was very interesting.

40 minutes later, we started the activities. The participants, in a very simple way, understood how the basic idea of the Wing Chun system works and the proposal was to work on two possibilities of simple answers for two types of very common attacks. What strategies to use and what that type of technique wants to tell us in behavioral terms. In the end, counting on the help of my closest students, Antonio, Eduardo and João, we could at the same time demonstrate the form Siu Lin Tau to the guests, elucidate some questions of how kung fu is inserted in daily life and often, we do not realize.

2º Free Open Class Wing Chun Kung Fu

Last year, shortly before the end of the second semester, we had in our core of  the Brazilian Wing Chun Academy, the first Open Class of Wing Chun in our space in the ''Military Police Club in Pernambuco.''

( Video feito durante o primeiro Free Open Class, ano passado, onde Eduardo me auxilia a demonstrar alguns Free combos )

The event was really interesting from the point of view of the mobilization of our training partners and the regular students. We received enthusiastic visitors to know the methodology and some already practicing different styles of Kung Fu that could have the opportunity to exchange some ideas.
